I am proud to be the sponsor of Motion 155 (M-155), which would designate every June as Filipino Heritage month across Canada, from coast to coast to coast.
According to the 2016 Census by Statistics Canada, Filipinos are the largest growing ethnic group in Canada. They make strong contributions to Canadian culture, society and life, from public service and business to sports and the arts. Many come to Canada as caregivers, doing one of the most important jobs there is — caring for our seniors.
June is the month of the Philippines Independence Day, and has already been recognized as Filipino Heritage Month by the City of Toronto. If successful, this would be a time for all Canadians to recognize Filipino heritage and this vibrant community
I hope that M-155 will be debated in the House of Commons this spring, and will receive broad support. To show that Canadians from coast to coast to coast support this initiative, I am circulating a petition and asking that people sign to indicate their support. The petitions will be presented in the House of Commons.
Please click to download a copy of the petition to gather signatures from your local community. Completed petitions can be mailed (postage free) to: Office of MP Salma Zahid, House of Commons, Ottawa, ON K1A-0A6.
Thank you for your support! Salamat!
"That, in the opinion of the House, the government should recognize the contributions that Filipino-Canadians have made to Canadian society, the richness of the Filipino language and culture, and the importance of reflecting upon Filipino heritage for future generations by declaring June, every year, Filipino Heritage Month."Motion 155
